Tracking Macros

Ever wonder what people are talking about when they say, “they’re tracking their Macros”?

There are many different ways to eat healthy, “Tracking Macros” is just one of those ways. For me, it’s been the easiest and most efficient way to make sure I’m eating for my “all around” health. By that I mean, I eat to fuel my body according to my goals and I also occasionally enjoy treats and comfort food which we all know is good for the soul. I have a maintenance set of Macros that I follow and can adjust them according to whatever goals I’m currently working towards.

What are Macronutrients or Macros?

-Macronutrients are the types of food in our diets that are required in large amounts. The 3 Macronutrients are: Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fat.

Protein: Protein is a macronutrient that is essential to building muscle mass. It is commonly found in animal products, though is also present in other sources, such as nuts and legumes. (livescience.com)

Carbohydrates: are the sugars, starches and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products. … The American Diabetes Association notes that carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. (livescience.com)

Fats: is a macronutrient whose primary function is as an energy reserve. Fats also help the body absorb necessary fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K). Dietary fat also helps keep hair and skin healthy, insulates the body, protects organs and fills fat cells.  (livescience.com)

A Macronutrient Diet (also referred to as “Flexible dieting”) consists of following a prescribed set of Macronutrients (Macros). Everyone is different so instead of just focusing on calories, you learn to track your macros and in the process learn where your calories are coming from and how each of them impact your body. (This is why I fell in love with eating this way)

A Macro diet is designed to help your body become more efficient. When you work with a nutrition coach, your set of macros are individually based on things like: your gender, lifestyle, activity level and your goals. When I’m working with a client, I have a questionnaire that they fill out that gives me the information needed to set their personal macros for their lifestyle.
