Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to hit it hard in 2019!

I spent a couple of days out of town and was able to use the hotel fitness center to get my workouts in while I was away. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few days off from your training & occasionally I will take some time off, but I usually go knowing I’ll try to get something in even if it’s a light workout & it’s generally not my regular programming. I will typically hit the gym pretty early, that way I’m back and ready to go for the day with everyone else. This time though, my husband and I wanted to get away just to relax after a crazy busy Christmas, so I was able to sleep in a little bit and we worked out together at the hotel gym (an added treat!). Anyway, hotel gyms can be hit or miss, & at a minimum the equipment will be different than what you’re used to. That’s why I always go see what’s available then write something out based on that. I’ll share what I did while I was away at the end of the post but first I thought it would be helpful to share a little hotel gym etiquette with you.

It pretty much boils down to one thing:

BE COURTEOUS.

Many times I go to the gym and I’m the only one in there, other times there’s not enough equipment to go around. That was the case this trip. Everyone was trying to get in their workouts. HOW GREAT IS THAT?!!! When I get to the gym I will warm up & get the equipment together that I’ll need for the WOD. Sometimes this will work and sometimes it won’t, so remember to:

BE FLEXIBLE.

If someone’s using what you need just move on to the next thing, or substitute something else. I had some strict pull ups in my WOD but a couple of rounds I did dumbbell low rows while someone else was working at the rig. Don’t sweat it if you can’t get in everything. Remember, you’re on vacation. The goal is just to get in some kind of a workout.

When I’m away I almost always do some kind of running because there are usually plenty of treadmills. This trip though there was a shortage, so even though I incorporated running into my WOD I kept a cleaning cloth handy and wiped the treadmill down each time I finished so that if someone else came in they could jump on a clean treadmill. It took a little more time and I risked losing my treadmill but that’s ok. I figured if that happened I’d do jumping jacks or burpees instead. I know some people who travel quite often and I’ve heard them say how they hated working out with people who hog all the equipment. That’s not cool so just be mindful and ready to share what’s available!

And lastly:

CLEAN & PUT AWAY YOUR EQUIPMENT.

This may seem pretty obvious but picking up after yourself is important.

Working out while you’re on vacation might sound a little strange but I love it! I enjoy mixing it up a little while I’m away & I’m always excited to get back to my home gym!

Workout 1:

Run 400 m

then:

3 Minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible)

4 Burpees

6 Push Ups

8 Weighted Lunges (you can hold the DB’s in the front rack position or just hold them down at your side)

REPEAT EVERYTHING 3-4 TIMES

Workout 2:

3-4 Rounds:

Run 200 m

10 Dumbbell Thrusters

5 Strict Pull Ups or Dumbbell Low Rows (make the weight challenging)
